Friends and Colleagues at Nature Saskatchewan

Remembering Morley Maier

We are saddened to say goodbye to our friend, board member, and fellow naturalist, Morley Maier, who passed away on October 7th, 2026, following a brief illness. Morley was a wonderful man, a leader, a teacher, an artist, a friend and a dedicated Conservationist. He was a great listener and advocate for connecting people, especially the younger generations, to nature. He always made those around him feel welcome and heard.

At the time of his passing, Morley had recently returned to the Nature Saskatchewan Board and was Chair of the Lands Committee. He was also a very active member of the Yellowhead Nature Society (YNS) in the Saltcoats/Yorkton area. Under Morley’s leadership, this group developed the Road Allowance Preservation program. This program works directly with local municipal governments to erect signage on local undeveloped road allowances, thus conserving these natural corridors in an era of rapidly disappearing natural habitat. The Road Allowance Preservation program is so successful that other conservation groups in the province are now emulating it.

The word “served” is also important when describing Morley and the many legacies he left behind. Morley generously shared his skills and wisdom with all who had the pleasure of knowing him and his sage advice will be greatly missed. Morley loved his family, and we were so lucky to have him and his wife, Paula, join many spring and fall meets over the years. Their love and adoration for each other was felt and inspiring.

He was an educator, a photographer, a builder of beautiful birdhouses and a willow basket weaver. He enjoyed beekeeping and was heavily involved as a founding member of the Treaty Land Sharing Network. Morley was a quiet and unassuming, gentle man who embraced those around him. All who met Morley will treasure fond memories of a very fine friend; he is missed but not forgotten.
