Walk a Road Allowance

Although small pieces of land, Saskatchewan's road allowances provide habitat for wildlife and enjoyment for those who choose to take a stroll.  The Road Allowance Project began with the Yellowhead Nature Society as an idea in February 2022. The focus of the progam was to preserve road allowances within individual rural municipalities, using the tag line For All to Enjoy.

Yellowhead Nature Society

The Yellowhead Nature Society worked with rural municipalities to bring this vision to life. To date there are 86 signs placed thoughout the four rural municipalities of Saltcoats, Cana, Oakney and Wallace and this number is growing.

Information about each road allowance including GPS co-ordinates can be found on the Yellowhead Nature Society website.

Fort Qu'Appelle Nature Society

The Fort Qu'Appelle Natural History Society's (FQNHS) Road Allowance Project is a work-in-progress. Inspired by the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association's extensive Road Allowance Project, their members set up a booth at the 2024 Abernethy Fair to share the benefits of a Road Allowance Project with the members of the R.M. of Abernethy. Community members were overwhelmingly positive and shared many potential places of natural interest within the R.M. The group then presented a plan for their Road Allowance Project to the R.M. Council, which was passed. Signs are currently being made with the hope of having some up by the end of 2026. Please check back often, as locations will be shared soon.
